Bridge Closed to Traffic During Construction
MAYNARD – The Town of Maynard and Town Administrator Gregory Johnson announce that the long-awaited MassDOT-funded Florida Road Bridge Replacement Project will begin next month, resulting in changes to traffic patterns.
The 1915 bridge has outlived its useful lifespan. It has several structural issues, including a deficient concrete arch, deteriorating sidewalks, narrow roadway and shoulders and poor sight lines.
The new bridge will feature crash-tested railings and end posts, new sidewalks, and improved drainage. Sections of water and sewer mains will be replaced in the bridge area. Utility poles and overhead wires will also be relocated.
The replacement is a collaboration among the Town of Maynard, Massachusetts Department of Transportation Highway Division and the Federal Highway Administration.
Tully Construction, the project’s contractor, will begin work between the end of October and mid-December. A more refined schedule will be provided on the town website once the town receives a detailed schedule from the contractor.
Construction will affect traffic flow:
- Florida Road will be closed during construction, which is expected to last two years.
- Marked detours will include Main Street, Summer Street and Nason Street.
- Access to Euclid and Thomas Street will be available from the Summer Street side of Florida Road.
- The Florida Court municipal parking lot will be closed to the public during construction.
Abutters will continue to have access to Florida Road. Pedestrians and bicyclists will continue to have access to the Assabet River Rail Trail and Summer Street.
“We ask that residents and motorists be patient throughout the span of this vital infrastructure project,” Town Administrator Johnson said. “The project will give the Town of Maynard a modern and safer Florida Road Bridge, and we are excited to see the work commence.”
The Town of Maynard will post regular updates on its Florida Road Bridge Project page.
