ACTON — Town Manager John S. Mangiaratti and Director of Public Works Corey York are pleased to announce that the Town of Acton, in partnership with the Friends of the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail (FBFRT), has installed new automated detection sensors on the flashing crosswalk signs along the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail.
The new automated sensors will detect pedestrians and bicyclists and activate the flashing beacons on the crosswalk signs to alert drivers approaching the crossings.
The Friends of the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail awarded funding to the Town so that it could furnish and install this new equipment at each of the five road crossings along the rail trail in town (Wetherbee Street, Concord Road, Brook Street, and two locations along Main Street).
The existing push-button activation will remain at each crossing in case rail trail users need to re-activate the signs prior to crossing the roadways.
“These new sensors will increase safety along the rail trail and make it easier for drivers to be alerted to pedestrians and bicyclists in the area,” Town Manager Mangiaratti said. “We thank the Friends of the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail for the funding to help us make these improvements, and encourage residents and visitors to use the trail this summer and throughout the year.”
