GLOUCESTER — Police Chief Edward Conley and Public Health Director Karin Carroll are pleased to announce registration is open for a free, virtual car seat safety class to be held in June.
Participants will receive an age appropriate car seat at no cost. The class is open to parents and caregivers of children 8 and younger residing in Gloucester.
WHEN:
- The virtual class will be held on Wednesday, June 2, from 6-6:30 p.m.
- Car seat pickup will take place on Saturday, June 5, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m
WHERE:
- Those who register will receive a Zoom link for the class via email.
- Car seats will be available for pickup on Saturday, June 5 at the Community Impact Unit, inside Brown’s Mall at 186 Main St. , Suite 23
WHAT:
The Gloucester Police and Health Departments are pleased to share that a virtual car seat safety class will be held this June in partnership with Boston Children’s Hospital.
Pre-registration is required as there are limited seats for the class. To pre-register, click here. A waitlist will be available once the class is full. Pre-registration closes May 26.
The class will demonstrate to parents and caregivers how to properly use and install a car seat. This will include information on the appropriate car seats available depending on a child’s age, weight and height.
“This is a really wonderful opportunity for parents and guardians to make sure their car seat is properly installed and is the right size for their child, and also will provide a free car seat,” Public Health Nurse Kelley Hiland said. “Car seat safety is critical for protecting children from injury, and we encourage parents to take advantage of this resource.”
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, car crashes are a leading cause of death among children ages 1-13, and 46% of children’s car seats have been installed incorrectly.
The class will take approximately 45 minutes and will include an opportunity for participants to ask questions.
At the car seat pickup event, a child passenger safety technician from the Gloucester Police Department and Boston Children’s Hospital will be available to assist with car seat checks and installation.
“Booster and car seat safety is absolutely imperative when it comes to keeping infants and children safe, and we are proud to be able to offer this service to our community,” Chief Edward Conley said. “We encourage parents, guardians and caregivers to take advantage of this opportunity, and to always feel free to reach out to us if they have any questions or concerns about car seat safety.”
The Gloucester Police Department has two certified child passenger safety technicians, Officer Vincent Adelfio and Officer Christopher Liacos, who are also available to assist members of the community with car seat installation and safety checks year round.
