ATTLEBORO — The Attleboro Police Department arrested one individual while investigating a series of motor vehicle break-ins that occurred overnight.
At approximately 12:30 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 17, a resident in the area of Emory Street and Forest Street contacted 911 to report two males actively breaking into vehicles outside his residence. The caller further reported that the two individuals were also breaking into vehicles parked at a nearby automotive repair business.
Officers Chris Ulbrich and George Downing-Carter responded immediately to the area. Upon arrival, the officers observed two males matching the description provided by the caller. Officers attempted to detain the individuals, at which time one male was successfully taken into custody while the second male fled the area on foot.
The individual taken into custody was identified as ISAIA LOPES, 18, of ATTLEBORO. LOPES was taken into custody without incident.
Officers immediately established a search for the second suspect, who had fled on foot. Officer Michael Antunes responded to assist Officers Ulbrich and Downing-Carter with searching the surrounding area. Officers checked nearby streets, properties, and other locations where the suspect may have fled or attempted to conceal himself.
The investigation remained focused on identifying and locating the second individual, determining the number of vehicles that had been entered or damaged, and identifying any property that may have been stolen.
The quick response by the reporting resident and responding officers resulted in the apprehension of one suspect shortly after the incident was reported.
The Attleboro Police Department encourages residents in the area to check their vehicles for any signs of entry, damage, or missing property. Anyone who discovers that their vehicle was broken into or believes property was stolen from their vehicle is asked to contact the Attleboro Police Department to report the incident.
The Attleboro Police Department also reminds residents to lock their vehicles at all times, remove valuables or keep them out of sight, and avoid leaving keys, wallets, purses, electronics, or other valuable items inside unattended vehicles. Residents are also encouraged to remain alert and promptly report any suspicious activity in their neighborhoods.
