Town of East Bridgewater Mourns Passing of Board of Health Chairman William Hubert

EAST BRIDGEWATER — It is with deep regret that the Town of East Bridgewater announces the passing of Board of Health Chairman William Hubert. 

Hubert passed away on Jan. 13, at the age of  77.

In addition to his work with the Board of Health, Hubert worked as a bus driver for the East Bridgewater Public Schools and as a security officer (“front man”) at East Bridgewater Junior Senior High School. He was also a lifetime member and past President of the East Bridgewater Commercial Club.

Board of Health staff member Sue Mulloy, who along with Health Agent Robert Philbrick, worked with Hubert for 14 years and remembers him as someone who never missed a meeting and was always the first to arrive and the last to leave. 

“He volunteered for every clinic we ever had and was constantly checking in with the office to see what was going on,” Mulloy said. “His typical answer to ‘How are you doing, Bill?’ was always the same: ‘Better than some, happier than the rest!’ He was always a great supporter and friend to both me and Bob.”

Hubert had served on the Board of Health since 2006. 

“The loss of Bill Hubert will be felt by many. May the memories of his wonderful personality and many contributions to the town of East Bridgewater be celebrated by all his friends, family and residents of the town that he was so truly committed to over many years,” former Board of Health Chairman and current Selectman Peter Spagone, Jr. said. “I was lucky enough to have worked with Bill for close to 30 years and got a chance to see what a wonderful man he was. I will miss his friendship and loyalty dearly, and I extend my sympathies to the Hubert family.”

The loss of Hubert is also being felt by those who worked with him at the high school, where he was a calming and friendly presence at the school’s entrance.

“Bill was just a good guy, end of story,” said East Bridgewater Public Schools Superintendent Elizabeth Legault. “He loved being our ‘front man’ — the first guy you would see every morning, whether it was helping School Resource Officer Tallitha Connor move cars along in the morning or sitting in his booth checking in visitors. He knew every parent and grandparent who came to pick up their child, and that’s a wonderful thing. He greeted everyone by name.”

East Bridgewater Junior Senior High School Principal Jeffery Sylvia remembers Hubert for the way he made both students and staff members feel each and every day.

“Bill was such an integral part of our EBJSHS family,” Principal Sylvia said. “His smile, his presence and his daily greeting made coming into school worthwhile. We will never forget him, and we are all blessed that he started our days with a greeting and a smile.”

The school held an extended moment of silence in Hubert’s honor this week. 

A private service for Hubert will be held Tuesday, Jan. 19, followed by a private burial at Central Cemetery in East Bridgewater.
