COHASSET — Town Manager Christopher Senior is pleased to report that the Town of Cohasset Water Department has been honored as a selection for the 2020 Public Water System Award Program.
The program, sponsored by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) Drinking Water Program, recognizes outstanding compliance in drinking water regulations throughout the state.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, selection of this year’s award recipients was strictly compliance-based; systems that have had no enforcement or compliance issues for 2019 and the prior five years were awarded.
Award winners represent the top 12.1% of all 779 community and non-transient non-community systems in the state.
“Our Water Department has a long history of outstanding regulation compliance, which is even more impressive this year given the restraints and restrictions caused by the pandemic,” Town Manager Senior said. “Each and every member of the department should be proud of this accomplishment and the Town is grateful to have received this recognition from the MassDEP Drinking Water Program.”
The Cohasset Water Department was honored in the Medium/Large Community System category.
“MassDEP realizes that it is no easy task to keep up with the ever-evolving federal and state drinking water regulations … Your compliance efforts have not gone unnoticed,” the award recognition letter received by the Town reads. “MassDEP encourages you to continue this level of excellence in carrying out your work of protecting and supplying safe and fit water to our citizens.”
Due to social-distancing protocols, the traditional in-person ceremony for award recipients was canceled earlier this year. Instead, the MassDEP Drinking Water Program will be honoring award recipients with a pictorial/video montage to be released at a later date.
Award winners from this year’s program will be invited to take part in next spring’s ceremony, along with 2021 winners, should the ceremony be able to take place at that time.
Co-sponsors of the program include USEPA Region 1, Massachusetts Water Works Association, New England Water Works Association, RCAP-Solutions, Mass Rural Water Association, Barnstable County Water Utilities Association, Middlesex/Worcester County Water Works Association, Plymouth County Water Works Association and Western Mass Waterworks Association.
