MEDWAY — Superintendent Armand Pires and Principal Amy McDonald are pleased to share that McGovern Elementary School recently held its annual kindergarten camp for incoming kindergarten students.
The camp took place from July 27-31 and 86 incoming kindergarten students attended either a morning or afternoon session.
The camp was established 10 years ago as a way to ease kindergartners’ transition into school. During the week of the camp, students meet teachers and learn classroom and playground etiquette through various planned activities. Some of the usual activities include a tour of the school, daily playground time, mini classroom lessons, games and more.
A number of changes and safety precautions were built into this year’s camp that followed the state-issued COVID-19 public health guidelines for summer activities. Among these changes included limiting classrooms to 10 students, tape markings on the floor to enforce social distancing, routine hand washing schedules and hand sanitizer stations. There was a face covering requirement for students and teachers, and students were taught how to ask for breaks from face coverings outside or in well-ventilated classrooms. In addition, students were given individual supply boxes and the games and toys kids touched were set aside to be sanitized before a different student used them.
Camp staff and volunteers completed training before the camp began so they were familiar with the health and safety regulations and how the school would respond if anyone involved with the camp was showing symptoms of COVID-19. A nurse was also on-site, as is standard for the camp each year.
“I want to extend a special thanks to all the faculty and staff for their tremendous work in preparing and providing this valuable experience to our students, especially Kindergarten Camp Director Karen Mispilkin,” said Principal McDonald. “With all of the challenges and changes this year, it was exciting to see the camp come to life and to bring a sense of normalcy to our newest and youngest learners.”
