BEDFORD, N.H. — Chief John J. Bryfonski and the Bedford Police Department honored fallen officers from near and far during National Police Week this week.
National Police Week runs from May 10 to May 16 and is observed throughout the United States as a way to honor local, state and federal law enforcement officers who have died or been disabled in the line of duty.
Members of the Bedford Police Department held a ceremony outside of the police station on Friday, May 15 to honor their fellow officers for Peace Officers Memorial Day. During the ceremony, the names of all New Hampshire law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty were read from the Roll of Honor.
The Bedford Police Department also joined agencies nationwide in flying its flags at half-staff to honor officers who have given their lives in service to their communities.
“We are proud to come together each year to honor those among us who have made the ultimate sacrifice to protect the communities they served,” said Chief Bryfonski. “Our thoughts are with them, their families and their communities. These heroic individuals and their commitment to the safety of others will not be forgotten.”
Every year, between 25,000-40,000 law enforcement officers from around the world would normally gather in Washington, D.C. to pay their respects during a number of planned events. This year’s events across the nation have been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
A total of 146 officers were killed in the line of duty nationwide in 2019 and 77 have been killed so far in 2020.
