MAYNARD — Town Administrator Greg Johnson would like to announce the successful completion of the study of the municipal parking lot at Naylor Court.
The intent is to use the report to guide the future design of that area in order to improve the walk-ability and usability of the area located off of Summer Street.
“When you look at an aerial view of Maynard, you realize Naylor Court truly is the core of downtown,” said Town Planner Bill Nemser. “Inclusion of the adjacent Veterans Memorial Park, which itself was the subject of community workshops in 2016 and 2017, and provides a number of opportunities.”
This has been a goal of the town based on the desires of the community.
“Over the past several years, the committee has been very active communicating with area businesses in the community,” said Maynard Economic Development Committee chair Jack MacKeen. “One common denominator is the desire to make our downtown more pedestrian friendly, more interconnected and more vibrant.”
The analysis was done by a panel from the Urban Land Institute (ULI), a non-profit organization that works with municipalities to create land-use plans that promote sustainable communities. The group has been working on the project since November, reviewing materials sent by the town, touring the area, and meeting with residents, businesses and Maynard officials.
The next step will be to evaluate potential improvements with staff, stakeholders and leadership, then to identify different types of funding in order to make the desired changes.
“As is the case with Veterans Memorial Park, funding for improvements will be dependent on a number of factors and as different sources for funding become available, we will try to match the most appropriate improvements with that source,” Town Administrator Johnson said.
The full report is expected to be ready soon, and will be posted on the town’s website along with the video of the panel’s Dec. 10 presentation.
The study done in 2016 on the abutting Veterans Memorial Park is available online here. Residents are encouraged to read that report as well to get a better understanding of the area’s potential.
