ROCHESTER — City Manager Blaine Cox is pleased to announce that the City of Rochester held a successful food drive to benefit the local chapter of the End 68 Hours of Hunger organization.
The City of Rochester collected approximately $2,682 worth of food and $250 in cash or check donations to be donated to the End 68 Hours of Hunger organization to help alleviate childhood hunger.
Throughout the month of January, city employees and the local school department were encouraged to either make gift card donations or contribute non-perishable food items to the local End 68 Hours of Hunger chapter. Donations included 607 granola/breakfast bars, 180 cans of pasta/chili, 178 boxes of macaroni and cheese, 177 cans of soup and 90 boxes of pasta.
End 68 Hours of Hunger Rochester is a private, not-for-profit organization that seeks to end childhood hunger in America. The term “68 hours” refers to the hunger some children experience between the free lunch they receive in school on Friday and the free breakfast they get in school on Monday. Through local chapters, the organization provides bags of food to these children to take home on the weekend. These bags provide the children with three dinners, two breakfasts and two lunches.
“It’s great to see our city employees and the school department come together in support of a great cause that gives back to our community,” said Lisa Stanley, co-coordinator of the Rochester chapter of End 68 Hours of Hunger. “Thanks to everyone’s donations, the City of Rochester was able to help out local families in need and provide meals for children who experience hunger over the weekends.”
About the Rochester Chapter:
The Rochester chapter of End 68 Hours of Hunger was started in 2014 by Rotarian, Police Commissioner and 2016 Citizen of the Year Derek Peters, during his tenure as Rochester Rotary President. It has been coordinated ever since by Peters and fellow Rotarian Jackie Fitzpatrick.
Peters is stepping down as chapter co-coordinator this year, and fellow Police Commissioner Stanley will be assuming the role alongside Fitzpatrick. The local chapter is sponsored by the Rochester Rotary Club and receives financial support from Eastern Propane & Oil, Holy Rosary Credit Union, Rochester Runners and numerous individuals.
End 68 Hours of Hunger Rochester is seeking to expand its base of support in the community. Any local business or individual that would like to support the program financially or through hosting a food drive can contact Lisa Stanley at rochesternh@end68hoursofhunger.org.
