WEST NEWBURY — Chief Michael Dwyer warns of a dangerous viral teen video trend that can result in serious injuries and fire incidents.
On Tuesday, Jan. 21, State Fire Marshal Peter Ostroskey released an advisory about two incidents in Massachusetts related to a new challenge on the popular video app, TikTok.
The challenge involves partially plugging in a phone charger and sliding a penny down the wall onto the exposed prongs. This results in sparks, electrical system damages and, in some cases, a fire. To view the video of the challenge, click here.
“This trend can cause serious injuries, as well as result in electrical damage and possible fires,” Chief Dwyer. “By letting parents and the community know about the trend, we hope they will help educate teens about the dangers that come with this type of behavior and help them make the right choice by not participating.”
Chief Dwyer would like to remind the public about the electrical fire safety tips from the U.S. Fire Administration:
- Insert plugs fully into sockets.
- If you have young children, install tamper-resistant electrical outlets.
- Replace wall outlets if plugs do not fit tightly.
- Do not overload outlets.
- Never force a three-pronged plug into a two-slot outlet.
In addition to these tips, Chief Dwyer would like to remind parents and children to discuss the important of recognizing dangerous activities and trends promoted on the internet.
