Whitman Fire Department Receives Federal Grant to Replace Critical Equipment
WHITMAN — Chief Timothy Grenno is pleased to announce that the Whitman Fire Department received a $233,000 grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) last week to replace aging equipment for its firefighters.
The money will go toward replacing 36 self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and will cover over 95% of the cost of the new equipment. The department will pay the remaining $11,657 of the total replacement cost of $244,801.
“This will be a huge help in replacing some of our oldest breathing equipment, which is nearly 20 years old. We actually just took 15 spare air tanks out of service due to age, so this grant came at the perfect time,” Chief Grenno said. “We strive to provide our firefighters with the best equipment and being able to replace these devices will go toward that goal. Thank you FEMA for choosing the Whitman Fire Department to receive the grant funding.”
The current SCBA equipment owned by the department is over 18 years old.
