AMESBURY — Fire Chief Kenneth E. Berkenbush reports that one firefighter was injured as crews battled a barn fire on Sunday afternoon.

Firefighters responded to 67 Market St. at 6:46 p.m. for a reported fire. Upon arrival, crews were met smoke and fire showing from a 2 1/2 story wood-framed barn.

Crews made an aggressive attack, as multiple buildings were located nearby. A second alarm was ordered.

“Firefighters did an excellent job keeping the fire contained to the original barn building, and I am proud to report that no other buildings sustained damage,” Chief Berkenbush said.

One firefighter sustained an injury while working at the fire scene. He was treated and released at a local hospital. The fire was declared out at 9:30 p.m.

Mutual aid was provided by Salisbury, Newburyport and West Newbury as well as Seabrook, Hampton, East Kingston, Kingston and South Hampton, New Hampshire.  The mutual aid crews were very helpful in bringing added manpower to the scene and for the extensive overhauling operation. The Amesbury Police Department was also on scene.

The origin and cause of the fire are under investigation by the Amesbury Fire Department.
