Newbury Fire Department Extinguishes House Fire

Blaze Began on the Grill, Igniting the Back Deck and Extending into the Residence

NEWBURY — Chief Douglas Janvrin reports that the Newbury Fire Department extinguished a residential grill fire that extended into the home and resulted in one firefighter injury.

On July 4, at approximately 7:30 p.m., Newbury Fire received a report of a grill that was on fire at a residence on Old Pine Island Road.

The resident of the home reported the fire and was able to safely evacuate. Due to the reported severity of the fire — which had extended onto the deck and into the home — Newbury Fire immediately requested assistance from neighboring departments prior to the first units arriving on scene.

Upon arrival, firefighters from Newbury’s Engine 10 were met with heavy fire from the front of the house. They quickly made an aggressive interior and exterior attack to knock down the blaze.

The Newburyport, Rowley, Salisbury and West Newbury Fire Departments also arrived on scene to provide assistance, along with the Department of Fire Services’ Rehab Unit, Atlantic Ambulance and National Grid, which cut power to the house. Although no additional alarms were struck, the response was that of a third alarm given the extreme heat and humidity yesterday.

The Georgetown, Groveland, Merrimac and Seabrook Fire Departments provided station coverage.

The fire was under control by 10:30 p.m., however Newbury firefighters remained on scene until 2 a.m. to ensure the fire didn’t reignite.

One Newbury firefighter suffered non-life threatening injuries. He was taken to an area hospital and later released.

The home sustained heavy fire and water damage and was deemed uninhabitable.

“Firefighters did a superb job attacking and putting out the fire,” Chief Janvrin said. “The extreme heat and humidity was an added challenge for operations, and I want to thank our neighboring communities for their speedy response to the scene to assist our crews.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Newbury Fire Department.
