Whitman Fire Chief Reminds Residents that Open Burning Ended May 1

Permit Required for Residents Using Outdoor Fire Pits

WHITMAN — Chief Timothy J. Grenno would to remind residents that the town’s open burning period ended Tuesday, May 1, and that a permit is required for those who plan on using outdoor fire pits.

Residents were able to burn brush, cane, driftwood, tree pruning and other forestry with a permit granted by the Whitman Fire Department. The burning period spanned from Jan. 15 to May 1.

Residents who would like to utilize fire pits, chimineas, wood stoves and outdoor fireplaces are required to obtain a permit from the Whitman Fire Department, 56 Temple St.

The permits are free and allow the use of fire pits and similar items from noon until midnight.

Fire pits must be attended at all times by the permit holder when in use. They must be kept at least 20 feet away from any building or structure and from combustible materials such as rubbish, wood and leaf piles.

“While this time of year is great for sitting outside by the fire, we ask residents to do so in a safe manner,” Chief Grenno said. “Always make sure you have a hose nearby or buckets filled with water and if a fire begins to spread out of control call 911 immediately.”
