Topsfield Fire Department February Newsletter

TOPSFIELD – Interim Chief Richard Harris is pleased to share the Topsfield Fire Department’s incident log for the month of February.

The Topsfield Fire Department responded to 113 incidents overall:

• Fire: 5 (totaling $5,000 in property loss)
• Medical Emergencies: 31
• Hazardous Materials: 7
• Public Services: 27 (including Student Awareness of Fire Education (S.A.F.E.) and free Child Passenger Seat Installations)
• Inspections: 33
• Good Intent Calls: 2
• Alarm Calls: 6
• Mutual Aid: 2

Topsfield firefighters also spent many hours last month shoveling out fire hydrants after snowstorms. Also, the department successfully completed the mandatory annual Massachusetts Office of Emergency Medical Services (OEMS) Ambulance Service Inspection.

Maintenance was performed on Engine 3 and Truck 1 for separate problems, including one manufacturer recall issue.

Chief Harris submitted a grant application for a Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant with approval by the Board of Selectmen and the Town Administrator. The grant, if funded, will allow the department to fund additional staffing during times when it is needed the most.

The Topsfield Fire Department assisted in an Aerial Ladder Class sponsored by the
Massachusetts Fire Academy in Groveland and also participated in the Topsfield Triad Summit for the county, held at the Essex County Sheriff’s Office in Middleton. In addition, the department completed public safety and school safety meetings throughout town.
