Maynard to Meet with DEP Regarding Elevated TTHMs Levels in Drinking Water

MAYNARD – Town Administrator Kevin Sweet announces that he will be meeting with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) and town representatives next week to discuss the cause and corrective action regarding elevated levels of Trihalomethanes (TTHMs) in the town’s drinking water.

TTHMs exist in drinking water supplies as a result of normal disinfecting and cleaning processes. Maynard’s town water supply is safe to drink and use. The town has NOT issued a boil water order.

As a result of a meeting between town representatives and the MassDEP on Feb. 29, the town has been instructed to collect samples at each of the water treatment plants, flush water mains in the area of town where higher concentrations of TTHMs were found, and collect additional samples after flushing to evaluate its effectiveness.

The town was required to submit an Operational Evaluation Report to MassDEP with an assessment of the situation and any corrective actions. The report was delivered before the April 6 deadline, and will be discussed at next week’s meeting. More information will follow as a result of this discussion.

More detailed information is available on the town’s websites at townofmaynard-ma.gov and on maynardtownadmin.org.
