Maynard Dedicates Wall of Honor On Veterans Day

MAYNARD — Town Administrator Kevin Sweet is pleased to announce that the community dedicated a space in the Town Building this morning to honor servicemen and women on Veterans Day.

The American Legion donated photographs of 44 fallen veterans from Maynard along with a number of military artifacts. Ed Sokolowski, Commander of the Maynard American Legion, coordinated the event with resident Marge Iannuzzo.

The space in the lower level of the Town Building will permanently display the photos and is open for public viewing whenever the building is open. In addition to the photographs and military artifacts, the area holds the Town’s POW/MIA chair and will soon include a display of Maynard Veteran’s Purple Heart recipients.

More than 150 people from the community attended the ceremony this morning, including World War II veteran Ben Sofka, Korean War veteran Guy Iannuzzo and Korean War veteran Vincent Stigliani.

As part of the dedication, Selectman David Gavin and State Rep. Kate Hogan spoke to honor service members. Boy Scout Soren Nelson read the Gettysburg address while Maynard High School student Sam Jones sang “My Buddy” and fellow student Grace Doyle sang the “Star-Spangled Banner.” After a reading of the 44 names and a tolling of a bell in their honor, students Matthew Schomacher and Rachel Thompson played taps.

The well-attended ceremony, held this year in place of the traditional Veterans Day parade, was an all indoor event due to the rainy weather. WAVM recorded the event and will soon have it available on local cable and on-line for viewing.

“We were glad to see the weather didn’t dampen the spirits of resident and that the community came out, packing the hallway of Town Building to remember our fallen heroes,” Town Administrator Sweet said. “We encourage all those who were not able to make it to the ceremony to visit the wall of honor to remember those who served our community and country.”
