Methuen Police Arrest Man in Connection with Multiple Car Breaks

METHUEN — Police Chief Joseph Solomon reports that the Methuen Police Department today arrested a man and charged him in connection with at least five car breaks.

At 3:35 a.m. Tuesday, police were dispatched to an address on Tudor Street for a report of two men with flashlights looking into cars in the neighborhood.

Police were given a description of the suspects, and a police officer soon located two men standing behind some bushes. As the officer approached, one man fled, but the officer was able to secure and detail the second suspect.

Officers located a backpack containing books, a camera, and other items in proximity to where the two suspects were standing.

Police established a perimeter, and a K-9 attempted to track the first suspect, but he ultimately could not be located.

Speaking with residents, it was determined that at least five cars had been broken into during the early morning hours and that items were missing from at least one vehicle.

As a result, JAVIER RICHARDS, AGE 32, OF METHUEN was arrested and charged with:

• Breaking and Entering into a Motor Vehicle to Commit a Felony (Five Counts)
• Possession of Burglarious tools
• Larceny of Property Over $250
• Larceny of Property Under $250

“This is a fine example of police, working in the early morning hours and responding aggressively to a report of a crime in progress,” Chief Solomon said. “I am pleased that the stolen property has been returned to its rightful owners, and hopefully our actions have set an example for those who seek to victimize our residents.”

RICHARDS was transported to the Methuen Police Department pending arraignment in Lawrence District Court. Police are still seeking the other suspect. If anyone has any information on him or his whereabouts, they are asked to call Methuen Police at 978-983-8698. All callers may remain anonymous.

These are allegations. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty.
