Wakefield Police Department Welcomes New Family Services Officer

WAKEFIELD — Police Chief Rick Smith is excited to announce Police Officer Amy Toothaker will fill the role of the newly created  Family Services Officer position for the Wakefield Police Department.

The job’s primary responsibility will be to provide police services to individuals and families that are in need, while developing and implementing programs and activities that help promote a safe community environment.

Officer Toothaker will also act as a liaison between the police department and several community and state organizations that focus on the overall well-being of citizens. Areas of focus include domestic violence, elder affairs, disabled persons, homeless persons, Department Children Family issues, the Wakefield Alliance Against Violence and drug and alcohol prevention.

“This new position is a highly beneficial addition to the Department and I know Officer Toothaker’s experience and skills will complement the role,” Chief Smith said. “We’ve seen a growing need for resources devoted to family services in Wakefield and we’re happy to be able to dedicate a qualified officer to the field.”

Prior to joining the Wakefield Police Department in 2009, Officer Toothaker was a Quality of Life Coordinator in a housing facility for the elderly and disabled.

Her passion for helping people in need has not wavered over the years. She can frequently be seen assisting people in the mental health community as a member of the Department’s Crisis Intervention Team, working with new parents to install child safety seats, or attending meetings with the Wakefield Alliance Against Violence.

“I hope to become a friend and resource to our residents at the Senior Center and continue to work with the survivors of domestic violence by giving them the support and encouragement they need to make choices that best suit their needs,” Officer Toothaker said. “Moving forward, I hope to be a point of contact for citizens in our community that have concerns regarding various family issues, whether it be child behavior issues, substance abuse or any other concerns.”
