Bedford Police Department Charges Roofer with Burglarizing Homes

Bedford Police Arrest Roofing Company Employee for Allegedly Burglarizing Multiple Homes

BEDFORD — Police Chief Robert Bongiorno reports that the Bedford Police Department today arrested an employee of a roofing company and charged him with breaking into two local homes and burglarizing them.

Police were called to an address on Old Billerica Road at approximately 1:10 p.m. for a report of a breaking and entering.

The resident reported that they left home at 9 a.m. for a dentist appointment and returned four hours later to a bedroom that had been ransacked. All of the resident’s jewelry boxes had been emptied, and the closet and dressers had been gone through by an apparent burglar.

The Bedford officer observed work boot prints by a rear sliding glass door of the home.

Bedford Police noted that a roofing crew was working in the area. Officers investigated and eventually approached an orange Jeep Wrangler with commercial plates. The occupant, STEVEN BUTLER, AGE 26, OF MEDFORD told police that he was one of several roofers working that day.

However, an investigation revealed that only one roofing crew was working in the area at the time.

Other Bedford Police Officers arrived and spoke to the foreman of the roofing crew, who was cooperative. The foreman rounded up his workers and told them to come clean if that had done something wrong.

While this was going on, officers observed, in plain view on the passenger seat of the orange Jeep where BUTLER was previously seated, several earrings, earring backs, and a silver dollar.

Police detained BUTLER and searched him, locating more stolen items in his pockets, as well as a bag containing several white pills.

The owner of the jeep allowed Bedford Police to search the vehicle, and officers found various pieces of jewelry, luggage, electronics, and more pills, all of which were later determined to belong to the resident who reported the burglary and a second resident of another home nearby, who had not known that they had been victimized yet.

BUTLER was arrested and charged with:

• Breaking and Entering During the Daytime to Commit a Felony (Two Counts)
• Receiving Stolen Property Over $250 (Two Counts)
• Possession of a Class C Substance (Tramadol)

BUTLER was being held at the Bedford Police Department pending arraignment in Concord District Court.

These are allegations. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty.
