BURLINGTON — Today began in the 10 degree sunshine of the Burlington Mall, where nearly 100 police cars (including a K-9 and a SWAT Humvee) gathered to make the blue-light journey to Rhode Island.
They made the trip to celebrate the 7th birthday of an extremely brave and strong little boy named Tyler Seddon. Tyler is battling leukemia for the second time in his life. He wants to be a police officer when he grows up, and he told his mother that he would like birthday cards from police officers and firefighters.
He got a bit more than he bargained for.
Hundreds of police cars and fire trucks from all over the country came to Wright Farm in Harrisville, R.I. today for one of the biggest birthday parties ever. His hometown of Burrillville named him honorary police chief for the day, and the officers and firefighters all came bearing presents!
Locally, Massachusetts and New Hampshire efforts were led by Burlington Police Sergeant Gerard McDonough, Bedford Police Officer Kristen Dineen. The departments north and west of Boston met in Burlington, and there was a very strong showing from the North Eastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council, which is made up of 58 police and sheriff’s departments in Middlesex and Essex counties. The Canton Police Department organized departments south of Boston to meet there for the trek to Rhode Island.
Every department brought something different — toys, patches, pins, buttons, hats, etc. The Melrose Police Department Honor Guard teamed up with the Peabody Lego Store to wrap up “every police Lego there is” for Tyler, according to Sergeant Joshua Crowley.
The Lego Store matched donations put up by Melrose officers 100%.
