Andover Fire Rescue Responds to Serious Crash on I-495
Nearly Hour-long Extrication, Patient Flown to Boston
I-495 Closed Entirely for 20 Minutes, Northbound for 45 Minutes
ANDOVER — Fire Chief Michael Mansfield reports that the Andover Fire Rescue responded to a serious motor vehicle crash on I-495 this afternoon that resulted in a complete closure of the highway.
Firefighters responded at 1 p.m. to the median of the highway near the Corbett Street Bridge. Upon arrival, rescuers noted that a vehicle had been driving northbound when it suddenly left the roadway, rolled onto its side and violently struck a tree, wrapping the vehicle partially around the tree.
The male driver was the sole occupant and was trapped inside the vehicle.
It took firefighters, with the assistance of a crew from Coady’s Towing Services, more than 55 minutes to extricate the driver using specialized tools.
A medical helicopter was called to the scene.
I-495 was shut down in both directions for more than 20 minutes, and all northbound lanes were shut for 55 minutes.
The victim, a male in his late 20s, was taken by helicopter to a Boston hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries.
The incident is under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police.
