Town of Maynard Reaches Settlement with Department of Labor Standards
As with School Department Settlement, Fine Amount will Go Towards Remediation Expenses
MAYNARD — Town Administrator Greg Johnson is pleased to report that the Town of Maynard has reached a settlement with the Massachusetts Department of Labor Standards that will allow the town to focus its efforts on supporting the Maynard Public Schools and Maynard Department of Public Works in their ongoing efforts to remove asbestos and make necessary repairs and improvements at the Green Meadow School.
Under the agreement, in lieu of paying the civil penalties originally assessed of $20,000, those funds will be earmarked for operations and maintenance for AHERA compliance.
Superintendent of Schools Robert Gerardi announced a similar settlement last month, saving the School District more than $40,000 in fine monies.
As with the schools’ settlement, the town’s settlement with DLS acknowledges that the Town of Maynard did not intend to violate any laws or regulations in its reporting and documenting of damaged asbestos building materials.
“I am pleased that we can focus our funds and efforts in providing the best and healthiest possible learning environment for the students, faculty and staff of the Green Meadow Elementary School,” Town Administrator Johnson said. “I wish to thank DLS for working with the Town of Maynard in this effort.”
