ACTON — The Acton Fire Department extinguished a roof fire at a lumber warehouse Monday morning and remained on scene for several hours conducting extensive overhaul operations amid extreme humidity.
At approximately 5 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 17, Acton Fire responded to a lumber warehouse located at 840 Main St. after an employee entering the boiler room Monday morning observed burned pieces of material on the floor and smoke coming from the roof and called 911. Acton crews were familiar with the facility, as they had responded to a similar report in June 2020.
Arriving crews located fire in the roof decking and struck a second alarm to bring additional personnel and ladder trucks to the scene.
Acton firefighters and mutual aid crews quickly knocked down the fire, but remained on scene throughout the morning conducting extensive overhaul operations to ensure the fire had not spread or remained hidden within the roof.
The building was unoccupied when firefighters arrived, and no injuries were reported. Several firefighters underwent on-scene rehabilitation due to the high humidity and extensive overhaul operations.
The Acton Fire Department, with assistance from District 14 Fire Investigation, State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit attached to the State Fire Marshal’s Office, and the Acton Building Inspector are actively investigating the cause of the fire.
Investigators believe the fire may have been smoldering in the roof decking for an extended period before it was discovered Monday morning.
Additional mutual aid, including station coverage, was provided by the Maynard, Stow, Boxborough, Sudbury, Westford, Carlilse, Littleton, Concord, Shirley, Groton, Ayer and Chelmsford Fire Departments, as well as ProEMS and the Department of Fire Services Rehab and Drone Units.
While on scene, the Acton Fire Department received three medical calls. Mutual aid coverage from Littleton and Concord Fire responded to those calls.
