GROTON — Town of Groton Police are investigating a serious crash on Gold Star Highway involving a car and an electric bike early Monday morning.
On Monday, Aug. 10, at approximately 12:20 a.m., Groton Emergency Dispatch received several 911 calls regarding a motor vehicle crash involving a car and an electric bike on Gold Star Highway (Route 184), in Groton, at the intersection of Rogers Road.
A preliminary investigation indicates the car, a 2001 Saturn L200, and the GT73 Electric Bike, collided. The man on the E-bike was knocked onto the roadway. The driver of the car remained on the scene and called 911 for help.
Upon arrival, officers located the man in the roadway. He was unconscious but breathing. Other first responders arrived on scene and began treating the man, who was then transported by Groton Ambulance to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital, New London, for treatment of possible serious injuries.
The E-bike operator was identified as a 36-year-old New London man. He was treated at L&M Hospital and later released. The operator of the vehicle reported no injuries and was not transported to the hospital.
The initial investigation indicates the car was traveling east on Gold Star Highway in the area of Rogers Road when the E-bike, which was traveling northbound on Rogers Road, traveled through a posted stop sign at the intersection.
Emergency responders, including Poquonnock Bridge Fire Department, Center Groton Fire Department, Groton Ambulance Association, and L&M Hospital Paramedics, assisted on the scene.
Members of the Southeastern Connecticut Regional Traffic Unit arrived on the scene to assist in the investigation. The team of crash reconstructionists included officers from the Town of Groton Police Department and Stonington Police Departments.
Gold Star Highway, in the area of Rogers Road, was closed to traffic immediately following the crash, but has since reopened.
This crash remains under investigation by the Town of Groton Police Department.
