The Sandlot Spartans and First Responders All Emerge as Winners of the Fourth-Annual Special Olympics Softball Game in Stoneham

STONEHAM — In a game where no one kept score and everyone emerged as winners, the Sandlot Spartans softball team took to the diamond against police, firefighters and DPW workers during the fourth-annual Special Olympics Softball Game at Recreation Field.

The annual game is an opportunity for residents to come together, enjoy an evening of friendly competition, and support an organization that promotes courage, determination, and belonging.

Organized by Stoneham Police Business Manager Erin Sinclair and her father Bob Sweeney, the game gives local Special Olympians a chance to play against Stoneham first responders, while also raising funds for Special Olympics Massachusetts.

Jeanne Craigie served as the announcer and emcee. Michelle and Bill Perry, New Chapter Living, Gould Street House and The MacDonald House donated free ice cream for everyone in attendance. Other sponsors include Christine’s Sweet Shop and Good News Garage in Cambridge. A 50/50 raffle helped raise funds for Special Olympics Massachusetts, and $255 was raised because winner Jeanne Craigie donated her winnings.

Organizers thank St. Patrick’s Deacon David Caouette for his blessing, Billy Dunn for donating his time to umpire the game, Rick Selter for donating his time to take photos, Michael Shannon for DJing the event, and Gino Millerick for being a base coach.

The Sandlot Spartans are a local Special Olympics softball team for those ages 18 and up.

Town Manager Dennis Sheehan attended the game, as did residents who were able to see the joy in players as they got hits and later crossed home plate.

“What makes this even more meaningful is that my coworkers volunteer their own personal time to be there. That level of commitment speaks volumes about the character of the men and women of our Police, Fire, and DPW departments,” said organizer and Stoneham Police Business Manager Erin Sinclair. “It is a powerful example of what makes our organization so strong — people who willingly come together, give of themselves, and serve others with the shared goal of making a positive difference in our community.”

“Our officers, supervisors, and fellow first responders all love playing in this annual game, not just because of the joy we share with the Sandlot Spartans, but because we don’t always get to experience positive interactions, and we cherish the opportunity to bond with community members,” said Chief James O’Connor. “I want to thank Erin and all those who make this event possible each year, and I thank the Sandlot Spartans for another exciting game!”
