NEWPORT — The Newport Police Department arrested and charged a man with assault of a protected professional, obstruction of justice and several other crimes after the Department responded to a fight on the Newport Boardwalk on Thursday.
GEROMY J. WELLS, AGE 41, of NEWPORT, was arrested and charged with the following:
- Assault of a Protected Professional
- Assault of a Protected Professional; Assault with Bodily Fluids
- Obstruction of Justice
- Violations of Conditions of Release
- Disorderly Conduct
On Thursday, June 23, at about 7:17 p.m., the Newport Police Department responded to the Newport Boardwalk for report of a fight.
On scene, police located WELLS, who appeared to be extremely intoxicated, prompting police to take him into protective custody.
Once in custody, WELLS became extremely aggressive, and started kicking and headbutting the police cruiser, making verbal threats toward officers and spitting at them.
In the process of transporting WELLS to North Country Hospital to receive medical clearance, he continued to act aggressively by spitting on and attempting to bite officers.
WELLS was medically cleared and transported by Newport Police to Northern State Correctional Facility.
In a subsequent investigation, police also learned that WELLS had appeared in court in June 2026 and was issued conditions of release that stated WELLS may not engage in violent, threatening, or tumultuous behavior. Police also learned he has a very lengthy criminal history, including 13 convictions.
WELLS will appear in Orleans District Court today.
