RYE — Beginning on Thursday, July 2 at approximately 5 a.m., the New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT) began removing a number of the No Parking signs it had previously installed along Ocean Boulevard (Route 1A) in Rye. At this time, all of the signs have been removed.
The signs had been installed by NHDOT to implement the Town of Rye’s parking
ordinance amendments, approved by the Rye Select Board at its May 11, 2026, public meeting. This ordinance is still in effect; however, enforcement has been suspended in the areas where signage has been removed.
The Town of Rye remains committed to promoting public safety for residents and
visitors. The parking ordinance amendments adopted by the Select Board were intended to improve roadway safety and preserve sightline visibility for motorists, pedestrians, cyclists, and emergency responders.
The Town looks forward to continuing its discussions with NHDOT regarding the safety and sightline visibility considerations associated with the state’s decision to restore parking in areas where parking had previously been restricted under the Town’s ordinance. The Town appreciates NHDOT’s continued engagement on this matter and looks forward to working collaboratively with NHDOT and other stakeholders to identify solutions that appropriately balance public access with public safety.
Questions regarding the state’s decision to remove these signs, or its plans for parking regulation on Route 1A, should be directed to the New Hampshire Department of Transportation at info@dot.nh.gov.
