North Reading Fire Department Quickly Knocks Down House Fire

NORTH READING — The North Reading Fire Department quickly contained and extinguished a fire in a multi-unit building Friday evening.

North Reading Fire was dispatched to 279 Main St., a multi-unit residential structure, on Friday, June 26 at about 7 p.m. for a report of a fire in one of the units.

North Reading Engine 3 and Ambulance 2 — Captain Mike Tannian and Firefighters Jason Tannian, Carisma Michel, Ian Helmick, Chris McCann and Kevin Robert — found smoke showing from one of the units and declared a working fire.

All occupants had evacuated the building prior to the department’s arrival. Crews were able to quickly stretch lines into the building and knock the fire down, containing it within the unit.

The fire is believed to have started as a cooking fire that spread to the surrounding areas in the unit. Fire crews remained on scene after the fire was knocked down and confirmed that it had not extended into any other units in the building.

Mutual aid support on scene was provided by the Fire Departments of Wilmington, Lynnfield and Middleton, while Andover and Wakefield Fire provided station coverage.

“I wish to commend our crews, and our mutual aid response, for their swift response to this incident. Thanks to their professionalism and collaboration, this fire was knocked down and contained before it could spread throughout the body of the structure. Their work prevented what could have been a significant level of damage,” said Chief Don Stats.
