DIGHTON – Chief Christopher Maguy reports that the Dighton Fire Department battled a house fire on Rt. 44 in North Dighton early Friday.
Fire crews responded to 2136 Winthrop Ave. (Rt. 44) at 1:40 a.m. Friday for a report of a structure fire. Upon arrival, crews observed heavy fire showing, and a full working fire response was ordered. Crews worked to ensure no people were trapped inside, and firefighters mounted an aggressive attack on the fire.
Four residents safely left the building before the arrival of firefighters. Several animals, including guinea pigs, a lizard and a cat were safety rescued from the burning building by firefighters.
No residents were hurt, but the home was deemed a total loss. One firefighter was hurt at the scene and taken to Saint Anne’s Hospital by ambulance for treatment for heat exhaustion.
The Dighton Police Department was on scene, and traffic was detoured for several hours early Friday morning. Motorists are urged to avoid the area if possible.
Dighton was assisted at the scene by firefighters from Berkley, Rehoboth and Taunton, while crews from the Norton and Swansea Fire Departments provided station coverage to Dighton during the fire.
The origin and cause of the fire are under investigation by the Dighton Fire Department and the Massachusetts State Fire Marshal’s office, which also responded to the scene.
