Town of Dennis Updates Community on Ongoing Site Work at Corner of Bob Crowell and Old Bass River Roads

DENNIS — The Town of Dennis would like to share information about the ongoing site work taking place at the corner of Bob Crowell and Old Bass River roads.

The 3.7-acre property, known as “Site 2,” was previously identified and evaluated as part of the Town’s Comprehensive Wastewater Management Plan (CWMP) and will serve as a recharge area for highly treated effluent from the new Water Resource Recovery Facility (WRRF). The WRRF is currently under construction behind the transfer station on Theophilus F. Smith Road.

As part of the process, trees were recently cleared from the site, while permitting and design activities remain ongoing.

“As work progresses and is becoming more visible at Site 2, we want residents to understand what is taking place and how the site will support the Town’s long-term wastewater management strategy,” said Department of Public Works Director Michael Lavin. “The development of Site 2 represents another important step in the Town’s ongoing work to provide a modern wastewater system that will continue to serve residents for generations to come. We will continue to share updates as this project moves through the permitting, design and construction phases.”

“The water recharge process that will take place at Site 2 will have no negative impacts to the area once the site is in operation,” Director Lavin added. “The water recharge area at Site 2 will protect our waterways and help keep them clean, removing nitrogen that otherwise would be discharged into the environment.”

The Town has been coordinating closely with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP), the Dennis Water District and several other regulatory agencies as part of the evaluation and permitting process for Site 2, spanning back several years.

A series of recharge areas, including Site 2, is considered a key component in the Town’s long-term wastewater management strategy.

Site 2 will include a system of underground leaching chambers designed to distribute highly treated effluent that will be pumped to the site from the WRRF.

Construction at Site 2 is anticipated to begin in spring 2027. Once completed, the site will be graded and seeded, allowing the Town to consider potential future uses of the property, including recreational opportunities.
