FALMOUTH — When Chief Jeffrey Lourie talks about the Jimmy Fund, he does not start with statistics or fundraising totals. The conversation begins with his late nephew, Jacob Matthew Boudreau, a selfless young boy who taught the Chief lessons he carries every day.
That influence is at the heart of the work that earned Falmouth Police Chief Lourie the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association’s Hector J. Pelletier Award for his commitment to the Jimmy Fund and the families supported by Boston’s Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
The award, presented to Chief Lourie on Thursday, is given each year to a member who shows the same commitment to the Jimmy Fund as former Cohasset Police Chief Hector J. Pelletier.
Chief Lourie has been a co-captain of the association’s Jimmy Fund Walk team since 2018 and has encouraged chiefs across Massachusetts to join the cause.
His dedication to cancer-related fundraising began early in his career through Relay for Life when he was with the Auburn Police Department and later the Pan-Mass Challenge with the Uxbridge Police Department.
That commitment only deepened when Jacob was diagnosed with neuroblastoma at age 5. Jacob battled the disease for seven years and passed away in 2010 when he was 12.
“Jacob taught me how to live,” Chief Lourie said. “He faced every treatment with strength and always found a way to think of others. He reminded us to appreciate every second. He was just a child, but he was a mentor for me. I am a police chief today because of what he showed me about courage and compassion.”
Chief Lourie often accompanied his sister and nephew to Dana-Farber for treatments. He said the care Jacob received and the years of memories those treatments allowed his family to have are why the Jimmy Fund remains so important to him.
“My family still feels his loss every day, but Jacob’s spirit lives in all of us,” Chief Lourie said. “The Jimmy Fund made it possible for us to have seven years of memories with him. Walking with the Mass Chiefs team is something I hold close. It is a way to honor him and help other families in the middle of the fight, while supporting the work that gave us time we would not have had otherwise.”
On Thursday, the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association also presented its annual donation to the Jimmy Fund. This year’s check totaled $18,500. With this contribution, the association has raised $154,303.94 in 2025 through the Jimmy Fund Walk, the Jimmy Fund Golf Tournament, the PMC Team, the Radio-Telethon, Pink Patch efforts and sustaining donations.
Chief Lourie said he was surprised and grateful to receive the Pelletier Award.
“I am honored to be part of this team and to do my small part to raise awareness and support families,” he said. “All of us have tough days at home or at work, but this cause reminds me to stop and appreciate every moment. Jacob is with me every day, and this work keeps his memory close.”
