MAYNARD — Chief Angela Lawless is pleased to share that Maynard Firefighter/EMT Ron Row completed and graduated from the Massachusetts Firefighter Academy (MFA) on Monday, Dec. 1.
Firefighter/EMT Row was one of 28 graduates from departments in the Career Recruit Firefighter Training Program Class #334.
Firefighter/EMT Row joined the department in April 2021, having already completed his Firefighter I/II certifications through the call/volunteer program, which met the requirements of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) at that time. Under the previous CBA, newly hired firefighters with these certifications could complete an in-house training program in place of attending the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy (MFA). Chief Lawless reinstated the requirement for all new firefighters to attend the MFA; however, Firefighter Row was grandfathered under the earlier provisions and was not required to do so.
Despite this, Firefighter/EMT Row expressed a strong desire to further his professional development and requested the opportunity to attend the MFA. Chief Lawless fully supported his commitment to continued growth, and the department is proud to recognize his successful graduation from the Academy.
“Firefighter/EMT Row has been an influential member of our department, and we are so proud of his continued development,” said Chief Lawless. “I am looking forward to seeing what Firefighter Row accomplishes next.”
During the 50-day training program, participants receive classroom training in all basic firefighter skills. They practice first under non-fire conditions and then during controlled fire conditions. The graduates are now certified at the level of Firefighter I and II and in hazardous material operations.
The other 27 graduates of Class #334 represent the fire departments of Andover, Auburn, Avon, Braintree, Devens, Gloucester, Holden, Ipswich, Lincoln, Medford, North Andover, Quincy, Swampscott, Uxbridge, Wellesley, Westwood, and Woburn.
