NEWBURY — The Newbury Fire Department and mutual aid partners extinguished a fire at a large mulch and brush pile behind a landscaping business on Sunday morning.
Crews are currently still on scene, ensuring that the pile does not ignite again.
At approximately 6:50 a.m., firefighters were called to 90 Newburyport Turnpike for a report of a brush fire.
Upon arrival, firefighters observed flames coming from a large mulch pile that included leaves and debris. The pile was about 100-by-200-feet-wide.
A second alarm was struck to provide additional assistance to the scene, including the Salisbury, West Newbury, Amesbury, Rowley, Newburyport, Ipswich and Groveland fire departments. The Boxford and Seabrook, New Hampshire, fire departments provided station coverage and Atlantic Ambulance handled an unrelated medical call while crews were on scene.
The fire was quickly extinguished and contained. By 8:30 a.m., all mutual aid partners had been released, and Newbury Fire crews remained on scene to douse hotspots.
The fire is believed to have ignited naturally due to the contents and size of the pile. No injuries were reported.
