CHELMSFORD — Chief Colin Spence reports that the Chelmsford Police Department is investigating a motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian.
On Friday, Nov. 21, at approximately 1:09 p.m., Chelmsford Police and Fire personnel responded to Groton Road (Route 40), across from the Chelmsford Senior Center, for a report of a motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian.
Upon arrival, first responders determined that a 71-year-old Chelmsford man had been attempting to cross Groton Road within the marked crosswalk. The pedestrian was struck by a landscape trailer being towed by a white Chevrolet 2500 pickup truck traveling inbound on Groton Road. The operator of the truck immediately stopped, rendered aid and remained on scene as officers arrived.
The pedestrian sustained serious injuries and was transported by EMS to Lahey Clinic for evaluation and treatment. The victim is in serious but stable condition.
The Chelmsford Police Accident Reconstruction Team responded and is conducting a full investigation. At this time, no charges have been filed, and the operator is cooperating fully with investigators.
Groton Road was temporarily closed in both directions while officers processed the scene. It has reopened.
The Chelmsford Police Department reminds all motorists to exercise caution when approaching crosswalks and areas with pedestrian activity.
No additional information is being released at this time due to the ongoing nature of the investigation.
If anyone has any further information regarding this accident, please contact Sgt. Matthew Fernald at 978-256-2521, x301.
