NORTH READING — The North Reading Fire Department has promoted Capt. Matthew S. Carroll, who has more than 20 years of experience, to the rank of Deputy Chief.

Deputy Chief Carroll was sworn in to his new position by Town Clerk Susan Duplin on Wednesday. The promotion takes effect immediately.

Deputy Chief Carroll joined the North Reading Fire Department in 2005. In 2018, Carroll was promoted to Captain. In that position, he has diligently served the department as a CPR instructor, computer specialist, and EMS Coordinator.

“Deputy Chief Carroll has consistently placed the department first assisting in whatever was asked of him and has also made good suggestions along the way in an effort to promote and further the department’s mission to the community,” said Chief Don Stats. “I am pleased to be able to promote such a high-quality individual.”

Deputy Chief Carroll succeeds longtime Deputy Chief Barry Galvin, who retired on Oct. 1 following more than 31 years of service to the community.
