The Attleboro Fire Department responded Wednesday afternoon to a barn fire that claimed the life of one horse and damaged a structure on Cumberland Street.

On Wednesday, Nov. 12, at approximately 3:30 p.m., the Attleboro Fire Department responded to 40 Cumberland St. for a report of a structure fire.

Firefighters arrived to find a large barn engulfed in flames. The property’s narrow roadway slowed access, but crews moved quickly to begin knocking down the fire while simultaneously searching for several horses that were trapped inside.

Firefighters were able to rescue multiple animals before conditions deteriorated. One horse died in the fire. The barn is considered a total loss.

“The quick, coordinated actions of our crews under very difficult conditions prevented a much greater tragedy,” said District Chief Michael Maitland. “Their determination and teamwork saved not only the home but also several animals.”

The fire was brought under control in about 20 minutes, preventing flames from reaching the nearby home. Crews remained on scene for several hours to extinguish hot spots. No residents or firefighters were injured as a result of the blaze.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
