West Newbury and Merrimac Fire Departments Urge Residents to Check Their Smoke Detectors, Replace As Needed

The West Newbury and Merrimac Fire Departments would like to share important smoke alarm safety information with residents.

In support of the Fire Chiefs Association of Massachusetts (FCAM) and the State Fire Marshals Office, West Newbury and Merrimac Fire Departments are urging residents to check their smoke alarms, as newer alarm models with life-saving batteries are nearing the end of their lifespans.

Smoke detectors and devices with long-life batteries last roughly 10 years.

Working smoke alarms are crucial to home safety, as they are indicators of emergencies such as fire or smoke that can cause damage or worse. Alarms are meant to alert individuals of an ongoing emergency, so they have time to evacuate safely.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), approximately three out of five fire deaths happen in homes with either no working smoke alarms or no alarms at all. Homes with working smoke alarms cuts the risk of dying in half.

Residents and community members are encouraged to check their alarm’s manufacture date and replace alarms as needed. Residents are encouraged to assist older family members or friends with checking their devices.

Smoke alarms should be installed in every sleeping area of the home, in common areas, and on each floor, and should be tested once a month. Alarms should also be reset and checked ahead of Daylight Saving Time, which occurs twice a year, in November and March.

Residents are encouraged to contact the fire department before purchasing new alarms to ensure they are purchasing the correct type of alarm: West Newbury at 978-363-1111, or Merrimac at 978-346-8211.

Individuals who have questions about their alarms or would like to schedule an inspection of their current alarms should contact their fire department.
