WAKEFIELD — Acting Chief Thomas Purcell reports that the Wakefield Fire Department responded to and extinguished a house fire.
On Sunday, Oct. 12 at approximately, 4:07 p.m., Wakefield Fire received a 911 call from a resident that reported there was smoke coming from the roof of their home on Outlook Road.
Engine 1, Engine 2, Ladder 1 and Car 3 responded to the scene.
Upon arrival, crews observed heavy smoke coming from the home and declared a working fire. Engine 1 crew stretched a hose line into the home and located smoke and fire coming from the brick chimney.
Firefighters began to open up the brick chimney to assess the fire within the walls. Crews also opened up a section of the roof to attack the fire internally and externally.
Crews were able to stop the fire from traveling into and across the attic space, which would have consumed the home.
The fire was deemed under control by 4:40 p.m. Companies remained on scene until 6:12 p.m., working on the extensive overhaul from the chimney.
All occupants were able to evacuate safely, and no injuries were reported. Residents are currently displaced and are being assisted by the department.
Acting Chief Purcell credits the immediate response and strong work of the first-arriving companies for stopping the fire and saving the home.
Stoneham Fire provided mutual aid as the Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) at the scene.
Wakefield Municipal Gas and Light Department responded to shut down gas and power to building.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by Wakefield Fire Investigative Unit assisted State Police Fire & Explosion Investigation Unit assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
