STONEHAM — Chief James O’Connor reports that the Stoneham Police Department responded late Saturday morning to a single-vehicle crash involving a car that drove from a parking lot into a wooded embankment in between an apartment complex and Interstate 95.

On Saturday, Sept. 27, at approximately 11:49 a.m., the Stoneham Police and Fire Departments were dispatched to the rear of an apartment complex at 1 Stonehill Drive after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting a crash. Massachusetts State Police also responded to the scene.

Stoneham Police Officer Colin Strong was the first officer on the scene, locating the car in a wooded embankment next to a parking lot in the rear of 1 Stonehill Drive, with the car being held in place by trees.

Officer Strong immediately went down the embankment and quickly found the operator, the sole occupant of the vehicle, who was stuck in the driver’s seat and unable to exit the car.

The operator, an 83-year-old woman, had no apparent injuries but was unable to open the car door.

Stoneham firefighters arrived on the scene and were then able to secure the vehicle in place and remove the driver from it.

The driver was then transported to a local hospital by Armstrong Ambulance.

“I’d like to commend Officer Strong, along with all the Stoneham Police officers and Firefighters who responded to this crash,” said Chief O’Connor. “Their quick actions allowed us to get this driver to the hospital as soon as possible for an evaluation.”

The crash remains under investigation by Stoneham Police.
