LAKEVILLE — Chief Matthew J. Perkins is pleased to report that a missing jet skier was located and rescued by a Lakeville Police Lieutenant on Thursday night.
Lakeville Police received a report shortly after 8 p.m. that an 18-year-old Lakeville resident was more than an hour overdue to return during an excursion on Long Pond. Moments later, Lakeville received a 911 call from a Long Pond area resident reporting shouts for help coming from the water.
Lakeville Police and Fire units immediately responded.
Lakeville Police Lieutenant Ryan Maltais, who was operating the Lakeville Police boat, located the missing 18-year-old on Lewis Island at approximately 8:48 p.m.
The teen reported to police that he was thrown from the jet ski and swam to Lewis Island, which is inhabited but only accessible by boat.
He was transported by boat to Captain Bub’s Marina where he was evaluated by the Lakeville Fire Department. He declined transportation to an area hospital.
The jet ski remains missing, and crews called off the search for the vessel due to darkness and weather conditions.
The incident is under investigation by the Lakeville Police Department and the Massachusetts Environmental Police.
