NEWBURY — Police Chief Patricia Fisher and Deputy Fire Chief Wallace Ziehler report that the Newbury Police and Fire Departments responded Tuesday to a significant motor vehicle crash on the Newburyport Turnpike.

On Tuesday, Sept. 9, at approximately 3:40 p.m., the Newbury Police and Fire Departments responded to a report of a motor vehicle crash on the Newburyport Turnpike (Route 1) at Boston Road.

The crash involved a Toyota Prius and a BMW X5. The crash occurred when the Toyota was traveling east from Boston Road Extension to Boston Road and failed to yield to the BMW that was traveling southbound on Newburyport Turnpike.

The collision left both vehicles heavily damaged. The driver of the Prius was trapped in their vehicle. Newbury Firefighters used hydraulic tools to free them.

The BMW driver, a 41-year-old female from Boxford, was taken to Portsmouth Hospital by Atlantic Ambulance paramedics, while the Prius driver, a 79-year-old female from Newbury, was taken to Anna Jacques Hospital by Newbury Ambulance. Both vehicles were towed by Newburyport Towing Company.

At approximately 4:07 p.m., a second crash occurred nearby on the Newburyport Turnpike, when a Ford Transit van that was parked on the side of the road attempted to do a U-turn and collided with a Nissan Altima that was traveling from Boston Road to Boston Road Extension. There were no reported injuries in the second crash and neither vehicle was towed.

The Georgetown and Newburyport Fire Departments provided mutual aid during the Newbury Fire Department response.
