Canton Electricity Choice Prices to Decrease in September

CANTON — Canton Electricity Choice prices will decrease beginning with September meter reads because of a recent regulatory change. Under the Town’s contract with the program’s electricity supplier, Constellation, prices can change in rare cases like this.

Canton Electricity Choice offers three options, and prices for each will decrease by 0.27¢/kWh:

  • Canton Standard Green: 13.434¢/kWh → 13.164¢/kWh
(Most participants are enrolled in this option.)
  • Canton Plus Green: 14.555¢/kWh → 14.285¢/kWh
  • Canton Basic: 13.003¢/kWh → 12.733¢/kWh

Participants in each option will pay less than Eversource’s Aug. 1 residential and small business Basic Service prices of 14.884¢/kWh and 15.150¢/kWh, respectively. For example, an average residential customer on Canton Standard Green will save more than $11 per month compared with Eversource’s current rates.

Since launching in June 2024, Canton Electricity Choice — a type of group electricity buying program from the Town — has provided over $1.1 million in savings to participants compared with Eversource’s Basic Service prices. Eversource’s current rates will be in effect through Jan. 31, 2026, so savings beyond that date cannot be guaranteed.

The new prices will first appear on October electric bills and will remain fixed through the end of Canton’s contract with Constellation in June 2026.

This change is the result of a state adjustment to the Clean Peak Standard, which requires electricity suppliers to purchase a minimum percentage of renewable energy certificates from clean resources that can supply power during peak demand periods. The Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources recently lowered the minimum percentage requirements for the period covered by Canton’s contract with Constellation, reducing the supplier’s costs.

More information about Canton Electricity Choice is available at CantonElectricityChoice.com or by calling the program’s customer support line at 1-844-202-6101. Electricity customers who have private supply contracts but are interested in the program are encouraged to contact the support line for details.
