NEWBURY — Police Chief Patricia Fisher and Fire Chief David Evans report that the Newbury Police and Fire Departments responded to a commercial building for a report of an explosive device.

On Wednesday, March 26, at 10 a.m. Newbury Police and Fire responded to a commercial building at 19 Central St., Byfield, for a report of a suspicious item,  possibly a tampered-with firework or pipe bomb, which was located on the ground in the parking lot outside of the building. The building is located in front of Pearson Plaza.

Newbury Police and Fire notified the Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad and immediately evacuated the building and secured the area.

The item was removed from the area and brought to Massachusetts Wildlife’s Martin H. Burns Wildlife Management Area in Newbury, where it was destroyed out of an abundance of caution.

There is no threat to public safety.

Newbury Police and Fire would like to thank the Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad for their professionalism and expertise during this incident.
