CANTON — The following is a statement from the Canton Select Board and Town Administrator Charles Doody:
“We are thrilled that Gov. Maura Healey has directed the Department of Public Health and the Department of Mental Health to pause their plans to close Pappas Rehabilitation Hospital for Children.
“The Hospital, formerly the Massachusetts Hospital School, has cared for children with the most significant physical and cognitive challenges since 1904. It has made an immeasurable impact on the lives of countless children and their families.
“On Friday, Jan. 31, Select Board Chair Michael Loughran, and Member John Connolly, joined U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch, state Sen. Paul Feeney, state Sen. William Driscoll, state Rep. William Galvin, state Rep. John Rogers, and Norfolk County Commissioner Richard Staiti, at the Hospital to urge reconsideration of the closure.
“We thank the Governor for hearing us, and for hearing the voices of patients, families, and staff who fear closing the Hospital will have a severe impact.
“We look forward to participating in any state review and will advocate strongly for the Hospital’s long-term future in keeping with the best interests of the Canton community.”
