WEST NEWBURY — Police Chief Michael Dwyer and Superintendent Dr. Justin Bartholomew report that the West Newbury Police Department and Pentucket Regional School District responded Wednesday to a social media threat that was made against Pentucket Regional Middle High School.
On Wednesday, Feb. 12, West Newbury Police were notified by a social media platform of a threat that was posted online against Pentucket Regional Middle High School. Police immediately informed the school district, and an investigation was launched.
Following established protocols, which are discussed by police and school leaders on a monthly basis, police and school administrators worked together to quickly identify the student who allegedly posted the threat. This incident remains under investigation by the West Newbury Police.
Chief Dwyer would like to thank Merrimac Police Chief Eric M. Shears, Merrimac Police Detectives, Rockport Police Chief John Horvath and members of the Northeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council School Threat Assessment and Response System (STARS) team for their assistance Wednesday. The West Newbury, Groveland and Merrimac Police Departments work very closely with Pentucket administrators and regularly meet and train together on school safety issues.
The West Newbury Police Department and the Pentucket Regional School District urge all families to remind students about the dangers of misusing social media and the serious consequences it can bring.
“Student safety is our priority. We’re committed to always working with our communities to ensure schools are secure and every child can learn safely,” Chief Dwyer said.
There was an increased police presence at Pentucket on Wednesday, and the community may notice additional police on campus Thursday.
