HAMPTON – Superintendent Dr. Lois Costa and Principal Timothy Lannan are pleased to share that Centre School is celebrating “I Love to Read Month” throughout March.
Centre School kicked off “I Love to Read Month” on March 4, when students brought in a photo or drawing of their favorite reading spot at home. The pictures were put on display in the hallway of Centre School for all to enjoy. The display will continue to grow throughout the month as students bring in more pictures.
On Thursday, March 7, Centre School celebrated its love of reading through its “I Love to Read Month” Guest Readers and Character Parade Day.
About 20 guest readers visited the school, where they had a meet and greet in the gymnasium with students, who all arrived in costumes of their favorite book characters. Guest readers were given their assignments before parading back to the classrooms with students to read together.
Guest readers represented the Town Recreation Department, the Lane Memorial Library, Hampton School District offices, the Hampton Police and Fire Departments, and school administrators from Marston School and Hampton Academy.
On March 15, the school will kick off its One School One Book reading program during an assembly, where the surprise book will be announced. Each student will be sent home with a copy of the book and a reading schedule, so students can read with their families. In school, classes engage in various activities and discuss their reading.
Throughout the program, students will be able to partake in Trivia Tuesdays and Wordy Wednesdays to help them take a deeper dive into their reading. Trivia winners will get their picture taken and receive a prize.
The One School One Book program will come to an end in April, when students will be able to visit with the book’s author in celebration of concluding the program.
As a culmination of “I Love to Read Month” activities, Centre School students, staff, and families will gather for a Celebration of Learning on April 17. The Scholastic Book Fair will be open, and activities will be held in classrooms and the school’s cafeteria.
“We love to see our students get excited about reading, as literacy is an important skill that we seek to develop every day in our District,” said Principal Lannan. “A big thank you to each of our wonderful guest readers for coming out to Centre School to celebrate reading with us, and to every staff and faculty member who helped to create this month of reading-centered activities.”
“The faculty and staff at Centre School have gone above and beyond to put together a schedule of amazing activities to celebrate reading,” said Dr. Costa. “The students’ enthusiasm was evident by the smiles on each face during the character parade. It is wonderful to see their love for reading blossom.”
