Newbury Police Officer John Baker Honored with 40 Under 40 Award

NEWBURY — Chief Patricia Fisher is pleased to share that Officer John Baker has been named a recipient of the Newburyport Chamber of Commerce’s 2026 40 Under 40 Award.

Baker was among 40 young professionals recognized the evening of Thursday, Sept. 24, during a ceremony held at the Secret Garden at The Brook in Seabrook, N.H.

The 40 Under 40 Award recognizes individuals who are making a difference through their careers, leadership, civic engagement and commitment to the greater Newburyport community and beyond.

“I’m truly honored and humbled to receive this award,” said Baker. “To be recognized for work that I genuinely care about makes this especially meaningful. Accomplishments like this don’t happen alone, and I am fortunate to work alongside dedicated professionals who share the same commitment to service and protection. I’m fortunate to have family and friends who support me, and consider myself lucky to have had my wife, the Chief and coworkers present last night when I accepted the award.”

Officer Baker was raised locally, and developed an appreciation for community service and civic responsibility at an early age. His father and uncle both served with the Newbury Fire Department, inspiring his own career in public safety.

Officer Baker joined the Newbury Police Department as a part-time dispatcher in 2015. He became a part-time patrol officer in 2017 and was promoted to full-time patrol officer in 2021.

Throughout his career, Officer Baker has shown a commitment to training and learning. He is a certified sexual assault investigator and holds certification through the POST Commission to investigate school-based incidents.

Officer Baker has remained dedicated to the Newbury community, serving with the belief that effective policing is built upon trust, dignity, respect, meaningful connections and a sincere commitment to making a positive difference.

“Officer Baker is a dependable and versatile employee, whose professionalism is enhanced by his positive attitude,” said Chief Fisher. “His commitment and dedication to the department and the community is unwavering. He’s an outstanding example of what a modern-day police officer should be. I appreciate the Newburyport Chamber of Commerce for acknowledging first responders in this category.”
