MEDWAY — Superintendent Armand Pires and Medway High School Interim Principal Paul Peri are proud to announce that senior Aurelia Mello has received the 2026-27 Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents Award for Academic Excellence.
Mello was recognized at Thursday’s Medway School Committee meeting.
Each year, superintendents who are members of the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents (M.A.S.S.) may present the award to high school seniors who rank in the top 5% of their class and demonstrate leadership, social responsibility, respect for others and involvement in their schools and communities. School principals recommend students for the award.
Mello, one of the highest-achieving students in the Class of 2027, was recognized for her exceptional academic achievements, along with her student leadership and thoughtful, compassionate volunteerism.
She is president of Medway High School Peer Counseling, whose members help freshmen adjust to high school. She has also served as an alumni mentor for Project 351, tutored fellow students and worked as a lead counselor at the Franklin YMCA.
Dr. Pires called Mello a “dynamic leader,” pointing to her service as president of the Class of 2027, a project manager for the Tri-M Music Honor Society and a student liaison to the Medway School Committee. Statewide, Mello serves as chief of staff for the Massachusetts Association of Student Representatives, helping coordinate events and the organization’s daily operations.
Mello is a member of the National Honor Society and president of the Latin Honor Society. Her honors include the Outstanding Junior Award and the University of Rochester’s Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony Award.
An accomplished flutist, Mello holds the first-chair position in the Medway High School Band and performs in the Jazz Band. She also serves as the band’s music librarian and has earned gold medals at MICCA solo festivals. Recently, she spoke at the Massachusetts Music Educators Association Day on Beacon Hill in support of music education funding statewide.
“Congratulations to Aurelia on earning the Superintendent’s Award for Academic Excellence,” said Interim Principal Peri. “Aurelia is a remarkable student and citizen of this community. We commend her for her thoughtful, compassionate and inspiring student leadership and look forward to what the future has in store for her.”
“Aurelia Mello is truly one of Medway High School’s most outstanding seniors,” said Dr. Pires. “Aurelia is a dynamic leader and contributor across many areas of Medway High School and beyond. She makes the people and communities around her better, and her commitment to excellence and care for others makes her a truly deserving recipient of the Superintendent’s Award for Academic Excellence.”
